If it itches in the genital area, burns and hurts, discharge from the urethra occurs or it hurts when urinating, much speaks for venereal diseases. Fungi, bacteria or viruses cause infectious diseases, which are regarded as a major taboo topic in Germany. Trichomoniasis, chlamydia and gonorrhea are among the most contagious and prevalent sexually transmitted diseases. Many Germans are familiar with terms like syphilis, but they often only recognize the effects on the body when it's too late. Itching, inflamed skin, pain, urethral discharge, and urination burning sensation are the most common symptoms. Reinhold Schaefer, urologist from the North Rhine-based medical network Uro GmbH, recommends affected persons to go immediately to the specialist in the occurrence of these symptoms.

„Urologists treat causes of infection and concomitant symptoms in men. For diagnosis, they usually take urine and blood samples and smears of the affected regions“, explains Dr. Shepherd. Some venereal diseases such as scabies and mollusks spread over the genital area on the whole body and require a large-scale treatment. Most commonly, bacteria cause diseases of the genitals, which urologists often treat with antibiotics. Additional creams and lotions help against skin changes. Even microorganisms such as those with the shame-seeded name „Pubic lice“ cause discomfort. Then it applies to those affected, in addition to clothing, bedding and furniture vacuum or hot wash to kill them.

Some diseases such as genital herpes, however, can only be treated symptomatically, as they - triggered by viruses - are considered incurable. For all STDs a must: also examine the sexual partners. Otherwise, a vicious circle will emerge, in which the partners will always take turns taking turns. Identifying Affected Symptoms of STDs early enough usually follows a simple and hassle-free cure. However, those who hesitate and despite complaints do not go to the doctor, risk chronic inflammation and in many cases even infertility. Such possible late effects can be treated far more difficult than the actual underlying disease. Only condoms protect against sexually transmitted diseases during sex, because they are the only contraceptive to provide adequate protection. During sexual intercourse with frequently changing partners additionally regular preventive examinations with the specialist of the control serve, in order to exclude illnesses without symptom formation. If it still itches in the genital area, burns or hurts: immediately to the urologist. (Pm)
