In case of diabetes regularly check eyes
Diabetes Society: Diabetics should have their eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist.
Patients suffering from Type I and Type II diabetes should have their eyes examined by a doctor at regular intervals. The German Diabetes Association (DGG) refers to this on the occasion of the nationwide "Week of Seeing". Because a high blood sugar and blood pressure also harms the eyes and thus the eyesight.
This fact should be taken seriously. Because every year about 1700 patients in Germany go blind due to diabetes. The background of blindness is a retinal disease called diabetic retinopathy. In most cases, the disease is detected only when it is already very advanced. The affected then already suffer from a deterioration in their visual performance. The Diabetes Society therefore recommends that Type I diabetes patients be regularly monitored from the 5th year of the disease. Diabetes type II patients, however, should have their retina examined once a year. Only regular, medical control can reduce the risk of blindness. (Sb)
