In certain diseases, decomposition products of various proteins in the body accumulate in the urine, which can be used to diagnose such diseases - even before other symptoms appear. These include not only disorders of the kidney and urinary system, but also diabetes or liver diseases. Even the color and quantity of the urine often give the first indications, even to the patient, that something is wrong. This is indicated by the Uro-GmbH Nordrhein, an association of established urologists.

A healthy urine is clear and amber. "The intensity of the color depends on the concentration of the urine, that is, how much was drunk," explains Dr. med. Reinhold Schaefer of the Uro-GmbH North Rhine. A visit to the urologist is indispensable, with a reddish or brownish to black colored urine. He points to serious illnesses that require immediate treatment.

"If we detect haematuria in the urine test - that is, if there are more red blood cells in the urine - we immediately examine the kidneys, the genital organs and the urinary tract," explains Dr. med. Reinhold Schaefer, urologist and medical director of the Uro GmbH. "If we can rule out diseases such as nephritis, kidney stones or cancer, for example, a urinary tract infection as a possible cause." Bacterial urinary tract infections are among the most common infections of humans and remain with immediate treatment mostly harmless.

Dr. Reinhold Schaefer explains urine colors

Colorless urine

This indicates a very high dilution of the urine. This, combined with increased thirst and unexplained weight loss, may indicate diabetes. If symptoms do not resolve after a short time, you should consult a doctor.

Milky cloudy urine

This may indicate a calcium metabolism disorder, but it may also occur after heavy physical exertion or fasting. If the staining does not turn to normal after resting periods or after fasting, consult a doctor.

Schlierig, flaky cloudy urine

Such discoloration may indicate inflammation in the urogenital area. If you have additional pain, swelling, fever or water breakage, you should consult a doctor.

Reddish to flesh-colored cloudy urine

Colloquially, it also means "blood in the urine". This indicates a bleeding tendency, kidney and ureteral stones or even tumors in the kidney and urinary tract area. See a doctor immediately. However, reddish discolouration also occurs due to foods such as the consumption of beetroot or the intake of medication.

Beer brown urine

Here, the discoloration indicates a possible disease of the liver. See a doctor immediately. (Pm)
