Therapy according to Chinese medicine is based on three pillars

09/18/2013

Almost every second person over the age of 65 is affected by the common disease osteoarthritis. Typically, osteoarthritis shows with so-called „start-up pain“. If they move after a long period of rest, pain will develop, which will fade away when the joints have warmed up. But also permanent stress leads to pain and those affected with time in a pain spiral: many are sparing due to pain, it stagnates blood circulation and metabolism, resulting in renewed pain, which in turn lead to protection. The mainstream medicine sees as the cause of osteoarthritis in particular degradation processes on the articular cartilage, prescribes painkillers and often draws the scalpel. Chinese medicine takes this view too short. For them, all-body processes such as changes in the quality of blood and tissue, their supply and disposal as well as inflammatory processes play an important role in osteoarthritis.

Musculature - Qi blockages also cause tension
Wrong posture and movements cause faulty tension in the muscles and cause joint damage or reinforce it - in this point, both medical disciplines agree. „But it is often forgotten that mental impulses are also reflected in muscular tension“, clarifies Christian Schmincke, TCM expert and head of the clinic at the Steigerwald. Muscle strengthening exercises alone are therefore not therapeutically sufficient. Methods such as Glazes, Shiatsu, Tuina, Qigong, cranio-sacral therapy, acupuncture massage, foot reflexology massages solve the tension-causing „Qi blockages“.

Clean tissue from harmful substances
The role of the tissue is often overlooked in the Western view. They retain their strength and elasticity only when the circulation and quality of the body juices and thus the supply and disposal work in the joint. „In the case of osteoarthritis, there is often a poor nutritional quality of blood and lymph as well as an accumulation of harmful substances in the joint space“, explains Dr. Schmincke. Chinese medicine speaks of substances that have to be diverted that remain in the body in various forms. Remedying the greatest possible renunciation of meat and sausage and a reduced consumption of milk proteins containing milk protein. Acupuncture, cupping and leech treatment also have a positive effect on the juices circulation. The most important pillar, however, is the Chinese drug therapy. It removes substances that need to be treated, stimulates blood circulation, moisturizes, nourishes, warms the organism and thus helps the arthritic joints.

Inflammation: Respiratory tract infections correlate with joint pain
It is also known that osteoarthritis is often associated with inflammatory reactions. However, why a joint in the process of wear is inflamed at all is medically unclear. Dr. Schmincke says: „Inflammation and slagging affect the whole organism. If such an inflammation pulse is already in the body, it seeks a damaged tissue as a valve. We often see that an untreated head cold causes or intensifies inflammatory processes in the area of the knee joints.“ In fact, many sufferers know the aggravation after a cold from their own experience. In order to stop this development - perhaps years ago - from respiratory tract infection to joint pain, Chinese medicinal therapy is used. (Pm)
