Autism: Oxytocin creates trust

French neuroscientists tested the hormone oxytocin in the form of a nasal spray on autistic individuals: confidence, facial recognition, and social sensitivity rose as a result. The scientists around Angela Sirigua from the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience in Bron, Eastern France, published their findings and the study structure in the American journal „Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences“.
There were 13 adult volunteers available „high-functional autism“. They gave them the hormone oxytocin as a nasal spray. Then they showed them different faces and examined the gaze behavior. The faces were considered longer by the autistic and especially the eye area more intense.
The hormone oxytocin had already led to an increase in confidence among non-autistic people in previous attempts.
Oxytocin is a protein hormone that has multiple modes of action in our body. It triggers contractions and ensures that the uterus (uterus) contract with the woman and the vas deferens with the man during orgasm. It is said to have an impact on sexual desire and in the context of social interactions.
The reason for the current way of working and the findings of the neuroscientists is the fact that people with autism usually have problems finding their way socially in contact with other people. Direct eye contact is often avoided. Whereby there are very diverse degrees in the expression of autism. Very light forms are characterized by minimal behavioral problems. But there are also degrees that fall into the categorization of a serious mental disability. Common is everyone who has problems in social interaction.
In previous studies, low oxytocin levels had been measured in children with autism. However, the precursors from which the later hormone is formed were elevated. This led to the assumption that something is not working in the production of the hormone. According to the researchers, this could be a starting point for influencing the social components of people with autism.
Autism seems to be loud „Center for Disease Control (CDC)“ Increased use in recent decades. According to the CDC, there should have been an increase of 57 percent between 2002 and 2006. Theories that there are associations between toxins in our environment or additives in certain vaccines (e.g., mercury and aluminum) have not been proven.
The fact is that so far no major steps have been taken in the field of drug control in autistics. The current results could lead to a more comprehensive complement of measures, in terms of improved social skills, for those affected and their environment.
