Check for conspicuous warts and marks in babies quickly
The number of skin cancers has been increasing for years. The earlier the cancer is discovered, the better the chances of recovery. Therefore, you should regularly check the body for cancer signs, even in small children. Striking skin lesions may be an indication of skin cancer.
More and more skin cancers
The skin cancer rate is increasing more and more rapidly. According to the German Cancer Society, up to 200,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. The German Cancer Aid expects an even higher number of 234,000 new cases. The chances of a cure are better, the sooner the cancer is discovered. Therefore, the body should be regularly examined for signs of illness, even those of young children.
Observe warts and pustules in children
"Your own ability to observe is the most important aid for the early detection of skin cancer, because: Skin cancer precursors are visible and sometimes palpable," it says on the "Onko Internet portal".
This is not just for adults. Even children should be examined by their parents again and again for warts and pustules. As the German Association of Paediatricians (BVKJ) explains, conspicuous skin lesions may in rare cases be signs of skin cancer.
Increased risk of cancer cases in the family
According to the experts, the pediatrician should, if necessary, look at lumps, warts or pustules that change in color or size, proliferate or bleed. According to the BVKJ, parents need to be especially vigilant if the family already has skin cancer cases.
"Children whose families have relatives who have melanoma are at an increased risk of developing malignant skin changes in adulthood," the association writes on its website. In childhood, skin cancer is very rare, but is often recognized late for this reason.
Protect children's skin from the sun
The biggest risk factor for skin cancer is UV radiation. Young skin is particularly susceptible to these rays, according to health experts. They therefore advise against protecting themselves from the sun on a small scale. As a general rule, the brighter the skin type, the shorter the unprotected stay in the sun should be. (Ad)
