Allergies and eczema New milk from camels from northern Germany
Actually, Lower Saxony is known as horse country. But the Marquard family relies on other four-legged friends: they breed camels on their farm. Although visitors can ride on the animals, the camel farm mainly serves to produce milk. This should be in demand for people with allergies and atopic dermatitis.
Camels move through the northern German countryside as a caravan
Lower Saxony has long been known as horse country. A family in Hiddingen in the district of Rotenburg / Wümme, however, relies more on exotic four-legged friends. As the news agency dpa reports, Beke and Andreas Marquard breed camels on their farm. "Standard" zero-octave fifteen "is not our program," said Beke Marquard. The farm is home to around 50 camels and dromedaries. The two surveying technicians have been running the farm for over two decades as a sideline. When visitors come to ride on the desert ships, the animals are tied behind each other and guided as a caravan through the "Hiddinger Bruch".
Frozen camel milk
The couple still has very different plans with the animals. In the future, the two of them want to distribute their own camel milk nationwide as probably the first company in Germany. "We started milking a few weeks ago," said Andreas Marquard. The approval for the sale was requested, but it is expected that it may take one year to obtain it. In the future, the product should be shipped frozen to customers. The taste of camel milk is said to be similar to that of non-pasteurized cow's milk. Even from the USA was requested. "They would buy all the milk," the farmer explained.
Inquiries from people with atopic dermatitis and allergies
Above all, however, there would be inquiries from people with atopic dermatitis and allergies. This is not surprising. According to health experts, patients with atopic dermatitis should only enjoy animal protein in the form of meat and milk protein products such as milk, cheese and quark with caution and avoid it in severe cases entirely. This reduces the accumulation of inflammatory products. Camel milk is said to be more suitable for people suffering from lactose intolerance (lactose intolerance).
Only German company of camel milk offers
So far, there is, according to findings of a club private camel owners nationwide no other company that offers its own camel milk. "There is only one farm in Holland and one in Switzerland, which also milks," says Andreas Marquard. The bustle of the family was initially skeptical, but now the inhabitants of the 500-Einowhner village have become accustomed to the sight. Even as a child, Andreas Marquard dreamed of owning a camel. The couple not only bred the animals successfully, but also already picked up two young camels from zoos. The two camel babies had been rejected by their mothers in Dresden and Münster.
How can camels live in Lower Saxony??
Some will wonder how the exotic animals can live in the cold north. The vet and agricultural scientist of the University of Bolzano, Matthias Gauly, sees no cause for concern regarding the keeping and breeding of camels in Germany, according to the dpa report. "In principle, old world camels, both dromedaries and bactids, can easily be kept under Central European environmental conditions," explained the expert. However, good knowledge is necessary in terms of care, feeding and attitude. For years, Beke Marquard has actively campaigned for a species-appropriate attitude and against the inbred camels in Europe. (Ad)
