I Increased intelligence quotient leads to increased life expectancy?
Some people in the world have a well above-average intelligence quotient (IQ). Researchers have now found that those with a particularly high IQ die less often at the age of 80 years. In other words, people with high IQ have an increased life expectancy.

Does our intelligence quotient really affect life expectancy? The scientists from the University of Edinburgh found in their study that people with a high intelligence quotient often die only after the age of 80 years. The physicians published the results of their study in the journal British Medical Journal (BMT).

Researchers examined data from over 65,000 subjects
For their current study, the British experts analyzed the data of over 65,000 people from Scotland, who were born in 1936. Each of the volunteers had participated in an intelligence test at the age of eleven. Thereafter, the subjects' health was medically monitored for a period of 68 years, the researchers explain. The researchers found that an increased intelligence quotient in childhood was associated with a 28 percent lower risk of death from respiratory disease. In addition, the high intelligence quotient also led to a 25 percent reduction in the risk of fatal coronary heart disease and a 24 percent reduction in the risk of stroke, the authors add.

High IQ reduces the likelihood of injury occurring
People with a high intelligence quotient were also less likely to die from injuries, digestive diseases, and the effects of dementia, physicians explain. These results also persisted when factors such as socioeconomic status were taken into account.

Why do intelligent people live longer??
There are several theories why very intelligent people have an increased life expectancy. People with a higher IQ take better care of their health and the likelihood of these people starting to smoke is generally lower. People with a higher intelligence quotation also tend to be more physically active and seek medical attention if they feel sick, the researchers say.

Lifestyle of intelligent people should be imitated
Hopefully, with the results of the current study, we can find out how people with a high IQ behave in the course of their lives, says author Professor Ian Deary of the University of Edinburgh. In this way, the lifestyle could also be imitated by other people, thereby increasing the likelihood of a slightly longer life expectancy and a healthier life.

Genetics also has an impact on life expectancy
However, there is also evidence that genetics is involved in determining life expectancy. Very rare genetic variants can play an important role in diminished intelligence and also negatively impact people's health, the researchers explain. (As)
