Current study type 2 diabetes - broccoli lowers blood sugar
Broccoli obviously can lower the blood sugar naturally in type 2 diabetics. These are the findings of a research team from Gothenburg. The effect is due to sulforaphane, a breakdown product of the mustard oil glucoraphanin contained in broccoli. Broccoli tastes good and is healthy. Researchers now discovered genes in broccoli that control the accumulation of phenolic compounds in the vegetables. (Image: Brent Hofacker / fotolia.com)
Sulforaphane is a phytochemical. It appears to have an antidiabetic effect in certain type 2 diabetics. Sulforaphane, like the diabetes drug metformin, inhibits the body's synthesis of glucose in the liver. However, this happens in a different way to the antidiabetic metformin and could therefore be combined with it in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
The study ran for twelve weeks, during which the approximately 100 type 2 diabetics in addition to metformin received either a placebo or dried powder derived from an aqueous extract of broccoli sprouts. The glucoraphanin it contains is transformed into sulforaphane by chewing or by the action of intestinal bacteria. In addition, differences were made in the evaluation of the two groups, whether the subjects were severely overweight.
The evaluation of the data showed that the broccoli extract could lower the blood sugar. In obese patients with poor blood glucose control In the sulforaphane group, sulforaphane reduced the blood glucose long-term HbA1c from an average of 7.37 to an average of 7.04%. In addition, fasting blood glucose levels also fell slightly in this group - from an average of 158 mg / dl to 147 mg / dl. The study can be found here. (Association of German Naturopaths)
