Health damage due to heat
The sweaty heat wave lasts even longer. For the coming days, temperatures of up to 36 degrees are predicted. When temperatures rise, serious health effects can occur. Especially important in the heat is to drink a lot. According to Sefrin, the daily drinking volume of about 1.5 - 2 liters should be increased by at least one liter.
Because older people often lose their sense of thirst, under normal circumstances they have little incentive to drink.
"In heat, the problem gets worse because more fluid is excreted through sweating. Ill people are also particularly at risk in heat, as certain drugs have a dehydrating effect, "explains the doctor.
The consumption of alcohol must be strictly limited as it leads to increased fluid losses. He also acts significantly faster and stronger on hot days.
Do not forget sunscreen
You should protect yourself from direct sunlight. Longer stays in the sun and physical effort should be avoided.
"Movements in a warm environment mean a double burden on the circulation. Infants and seniors should never be exposed to direct sunlight, "says Sefrin.
A sun hat, possibly with a neck guard, is a must to protect children from too much sun. Even for seniors, such a headgear is advisable.
For excursions or other outdoor activities you should not forget sunscreen with a high SPF. Also recommended is light-proof clothing that can absorb sweat and is heat-permeable.
Furthermore, the expert points out that living spaces should be kept as cool as possible and well ventilated in the evening or in the morning.
During the day you can prevent the ingress of too much heat by pulling in the curtains and closing windows and doors.
What to do in case of health emergencies
The German Red Cross doctor also explains what to do when it comes to health emergencies due to the heat.
"First indications of a heat emergency can circulatory problems, a sudden circulatory collapse but also muscle spasms are particularly in the legs," said Sefrin.
"This is where chilled, electrolyte-containing drinks - like apple juice spritzer - help. By opening unnecessary or cramped clothing, heat build-up can be prevented. Provide extra cooling with cold envelopes and air-blowing. "
If the condition of the heat victim does not improve as a result of the first aid measures, it is essential to call the emergency services at 112. (Ad)
