KG from Borgholzhausen in North Rhine-Westphalia recalls the product "German Corned Beef top quality 3% fat" of the brand "Hofmaier" with the veterinary control number EV1519 with all best before dates including 23.07.2018. The article was offered at the discounter Netto. "Listeria was detected in a sample of the affected article as part of an investigation," the company wrote in a statement.

Bacteria can be dangerous for certain groups of people

Listeria are bacteria that are generally safe for healthy adults. However, in some people they trigger a so-called "listeriosis".

The pathogens can cause flu-like symptoms such as nausea, muscle aches, chills, diarrhea and fever.

According to health experts, the microorganisms in certain risk groups (pregnant women, infants, persons with weakened immune systems) can also lead to encephalitis or blood poisoning. Pulmonary and heart valve inflammations have also been described.

Even deadly forms are possible. For example, just a few months ago, five people in Australia died after consuming listeria-contaminated melons.

According to the Fleischwaren company Specht, the affected product was immediately taken out of the sale.
