Updated S3 guideline dementia appeared
The guideline "Dementia" was developed by the German Society of Neurology (DGN) and the German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Neurology (DGPPN) in cooperation with 21 professional societies.
The experts emphasize the importance of psychosocial interventions in the treatment and care of dementia patients. The approaches and aims of these procedures are much broader than those of the pharmacological therapies. But ergotherapeutic measures should also be applied with the involvement of caregivers. Physical activity and light training also seem useful.
Flavorings are suggested for agitated behavior and for general behavioral symptoms in patients with moderate to severe dementia. But also for Ginko Biloba (EGb 761) could be considered for treatment in patients with mild to moderate dementia and non-psychotic behavioral symptoms.
The caregivers of dementia patients often feel overwhelmed and as a result develop health problems. Therefore, the experts rely on intensive training. More information can be found here. (Pm)
