Animal rights activists demonstrated in Hamburg against animal experiments

With stalls, events and demonstrations on Saturday several hundred people protested against medically motivated animal experiments in Hamburg. With banners and chants, animal rights activists moved through downtown Hamburg.
Called to the protests against animal experiments had the initiatives „Doctors against animal testing“, „Citizens against animal experiments e.V- Hamburg“ as well as the „Lobby per animal Mienenbüttel - citizens' initiative against animal experiments“. Already in the morning Hamburg citizens could inform themselves at numerous information booths. Around noon, hundreds of people were barking loudly through Hamburg's city center with banners, flags and chants. In the afternoon, activists gave speeches and several live bands supported the request of animal rights activists.
2.8 million animals die painfully every year
The call stated that in Germany alone there are around 2.8 million animals each year „Under the guise of science, a cruel and meaningless death must die in the laboratory „Doctors against animal testing“ have been working for years for animal experiment-free procedures in medical research. The increasing numbers of animal experiments each year not only caused suffering for millions of animals, but are also a sign of one „misguided medicine and science“.
Worldwide day of action against animal experiments
The main reason for the protest day was the worldwide day for the abolition of animal experiments. The week before April 24, International Day for the Abolition of Animal Experiments, attention is drawn around the world to the suffering of animals in the laboratories. The commemoration and action day was first held in Britain in 1979 and goes back to the birthday of Lord Hugh Dowding, who campaigned for animal welfare in the British House of Lords. (Sb)
