Experts advise prudent use of the sun
Whether on the beach, in the mountains or in the outdoor pool - the start of the summer holidays in several federal states invites you to spend a lot of time outdoors. As the BfS writes in a recent communication, while the UV radiation contained in the sun's rays promotes the formation of vitamin D in the body, it can also be a danger.
In addition to sunburn, conjunctivitis or corneal inflammation threaten in the long term, an increasing risk of developing skin cancer as well as premature aging of the skin and the onset of cataracts.
"If you enjoy the sun during holidays and holidays, you should avoid sunburn," warns BfS President Inge Paulini. "In view of the increasing number of skin cancers, we strongly recommend adequate sun protection.
More and more skin cancers
According to reports, skin cancers in the fair-skinned population continue to grow faster than all other cancers.
In Germany, every seventh man and every ninth woman suffer from skin cancer (bright skin cancers and black skin cancer) up to the age of 75 - and rising: in Germany alone, the incidence of new cancer doubles every ten to fifteen years.
For "black skin cancer" (malignant melanoma), the growth rate is even higher than for all other cancers. More and more younger people, especially women, get sick.
Every year more than 2,500 people die of black skin cancer in Germany alone.
Avoid strong sun better
The safest protection against sunburn is: Avoid strong sun! If the sun shines permanently, shade places provide rest for the skin and eyes.
In intense sunlight, protection should be sought indoors - especially at lunchtime, when the sun's effect is highest.
Outdoor activities should be planned accordingly. An orientation guide here offers the worldwide uniform UV index.
Basically with in the luggage is the UV protection, so protective clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen. The best protection is clothing - even when swimming.
Head and neck should be protected with a wide-brimmed sunhat, eyes with sunglasses. This should wear the manufacturer's instructions "UV 400" and fit well on the face.
Do not save with the sunscreen
For a while, sunscreen also protects. Basically, you should not save creams. At least every two hours should be re-creamed.
Apply sunscreen again after swimming, even if it is a waterproof product. This also applies to sweating and drying.
Suitable sunscreens with high to very high SPF, which are photostable and UV-B and UV-A filter. In the beach holiday beyond a beach shack or a parasol make good service.
Who goes by car on vacation, should think even on the way to the sunscreen. Although one is well protected in the car from UV-B radiation and therefore does not get sunburned. The side windows allow UV-A radiation to pass through.
This is why longer car trips on sunny days also require UV protection in the car. The same applies to travel by plane. (Ad)
