From the age of 40 every two years to an eye exam
Seven million people are affected by visual impairments in old age
Around seven million Germans are currently affected by the eye diseases cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma according to the board of trustees Good Vision. Cataracts are described as cataracts that gradually impair vision. In glaucoma (glaucoma) there is damage to the optic nerve, which, if left untreated, can lead to blindness of the eye. Macular degeneration is a degenerative disease of the "retina" yellow spot, which increasingly worsens vision in the central visual area.
Accordingly, these visual impairments in old age usually mean a noticeable loss of quality of life: Participation in social life is becoming more difficult, mobility is restricted and falls and injuries occur more quickly. The sooner the diseases are discovered, the better the chances of treatment - but the dangerous eye diseases of the later years of life often cause long no complaints and are therefore only recognized (too) late.
Children with two and a half years for the first time to the ophthalmologist
In order to continue to see well in old age, appropriate provision is therefore particularly important. As recommended by the Board of Trustees for Good Looking, eyes should be forty every two years,
and then later on medical examination at shorter intervals. Children should also be presented to the ophthalmologist regularly in order to be able to recognize and correct defective vision at an early stage. Without correction, seeing can not develop normally, according to the Board of Trustees. Therefore, children with about two and a half years should be the ophthalmologist for the first time, if there are already sight defects in the family, but already at six months or in case of abnormalities immediately.
