07/03/2013
COMEN Germany, the Association for the Treatment of Breast Cancer, is spending 30,000 euros on charity fundraising events to promote early detection projects and help breast cancer patients in the regions where they were taken. Breast centers, self-help groups and other non-profit organizations in Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg can now apply for one-year funding.
"It has been a good tradition in Germany since 1999 that we collect donations and spend them on breast cancer screening and the help of those affected," said Inge Althaus, chair of the funding committee, announcing this year's funding volume in Frankfurt am Main. "In addition to breast cancer prevention and early detection, we primarily support projects that improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients." In breast cancer, side effects of the treatment may affect the quality of life of operated people. These include lymphedema, fatigue or sleep disorders. The illness and the lengthy treatment can also burden partnership and family. "That's why we are calling on such institutions in particular to apply for project funding this year," says Inge Althaus.
The funding was taken in 2012 through the benefit races Race for the Cure in Frankfurt, Cologne and Hamburg as well as other charity events. For Hesse came through the Frankfurt run 15,000 euros in funding together. In North Rhine-Westphalia in addition to the Cologne Race contributed mainly to a golf tournament in Nettetal and the Lex donations run in Mönchengladbach to the result of 7,500 euros, in Hamburg, the Zumba Party in Pink in September, the proceeds of the Race raised to 7,500 euros. To date, KOMEN has provided funds of almost 1.2 million euros for early detection, aid projects and the promotion of health services research in Germany.
Duration of the promotion is one year. Applications must reach KOMEN Germany by 31 May 2013. Applicants will be notified by mid-July. The tender conditions and further information can be found on the Internet at www.komen.de/foerderprogramme. (Pm)
