White adipose tissue
When talking about fat, it means primarily fatty tissue, which belongs to the connective tissue and can occur in different parts of the body. There are three different forms of adipose tissue known. These include white, beige and brown adipose tissue. The most common is white adipose tissue. Features include storage of reserves, insulation to protect against too rapid heat loss and padding as mechanical protection against pressure such as on the soles of the feet or on the buttocks. In addition, the fatty tissue plays an important role in energy metabolism.
The amount of stored fat depends on the diet, muscle, sex and age. In normal-weight men, the amount of depot fat is on average 15 kilograms and in women 15 to 20 kilograms.
Beige and brown adipose tissue
The brown adipose tissue can generate heat from the stored fat. This process is called thermogenesis. While the proportion is low in adult humans, this fat plays an important role in infants and hibernating animals. The beige adipose tissue was classified as a separate tissue in 2012. The exact function is not yet understood. However, it is believed that it also contributes to the production of heat and is activated by certain hormones or external influences such as cold. Beige and brown adipose tissue are currently of great interest in obesity research. (Vb)
