Fig - The biblical crop

The real fig, botanically called Ficus carica, bears the popular fig fruits. The fig tree grows in the tropical and subtropical climate. Fig-growing has a long tradition in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, where it has been domesticated as a crop for millennia. The complex pollination mechanisms pose a particular challenge in cultivation. The flowers are pollinated exclusively by a two to three millimeter fig wasp species. To make matters worse, that the trees of the eating figs have no male inflorescences. So additional so-called Bocks figs are needed, which have male inflorescences, but the fruits are inedible. Since the fig tree can not postpone frost, it is rather popular in Germany as a potted plant.

Figs and health

The ripe figs contain minerals such as phosphorus, iron and calcium as well as quite a lot of vitamin B1, which is needed by the nervous system. Figs are considered beneficial for digestion and have proven to be a home remedy for constipation. The juice from the fig leaf stalks is used in naturopathy against rash by being brushed several times a day on the affected areas. (Vb)
