Bicycle helmets are means of passive road safety

The skull of a cyclist is to be protected by wearing a bicycle helmet in the event of an accident or a fall by intercepting the forces acting on the head, at least in part. Basically, bicycle helmets are divided into the categories of microshell, hard shell and soft shell helmets. The widespread micro-shell helmets are characterized by a smooth and thin plastic coating and through ventilation openings. The hard shell helmets have an additional hard plastic cover. Due to the higher weight and lower wearing comfort they are mostly used only in cycling. The soft shell helmets consist only of hard foam and are, according to many experts, not suitable for protection.

The energy that arises, for example, when the head collides with the ground, is partially absorbed by the foam in the helmet and can thus prevent a fracture of the skull to a certain degree of severity. Abrasions, lacerations and bruises in areas covered by the helmet are also reduced. According to studies, cycling helmets can prevent up to 70 percent of fatal head injuries in bicycle accidents.
