The ovum of the woman

The ovum or oocyte is called the female part of the germ cell in generative bisexual reproduction and bears the genome of the maternal side. Eggs are common in both vertebrates and plants. In humans, the oocytes originate from the ovaries of the woman. The ovaries contain between 400,000 to several million immature oocytes. After ovulation, the egg can be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hours by the man's sperm, which adds the male DNA.

The egg is visible to the naked eye

Beginning with puberty, an egg cell develops into a fertile female germ cell as part of the woman's monthly cycle. After about 400 cycles, the woman becomes infertile and menopause sets in. A mature egg cell has a diameter of 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters and is therefore just visible to the human eye. The process of egg cell formation is called oogenesis. Several factors, such as certain medications, chemicals or stress are suspected to affect female fertility negatively.
