The liver as a central detoxifying organ

As a "detoxification center", the liver is responsible for the conversion of toxic metabolic and waste products, which can be eliminated through the kidneys, among other things. The largest internal organ ensures that drugs and alcohol are broken down and channeled through bile and kidneys. Overuse of the liver is less by pain, but rather by fatigue, itching of the skin, skin problems, increased (poor) liver function, fatigue and gradual decline in performance. In order to give the "liver burnout" no chance, an annual detoxification can be carried out with simple home remedies.

Detoxification of the liver with medicinal plants

Medicinal plants that are considered for the detoxification of the liver, are mainly dandelion, artichoke and milk thistle. Because these all have a wonderful effect on the liver-bile system.

Stimulation of bile flow by dandelion

From dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) root and herb are usually used together for healing purposes. For this reason, phytotherapeutic literature and tea recipes usually read "Traxaci radix cum herba". As ingredients of the plant bitter substances, triterpenoids, phytosterols, tannins, essential oils, flavonoids, choline and inulin are known. These in their entirety stimulate the bile flow and appetite and promote the excretion of waste via the urinary tract.

Danger: Caution is advised, however, with known bile duct obstruction, in pathological processes with pus in the gallbladder or intestinal obstruction. Here it is urgently to discourage an additional strengthening of the digestive activity. In the healthy, after ingestion of dandelion by the contained bitter substances, an excess of acid may occur in the stomach, e.g. can be associated with heartburn.

For liver detoxification, the application is suitable as a tea cure.

For a cup of dandelion tea, pour:

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons dandelion herb with root
(dried in the pharmacy available) with
  • 0.25 l of boiling water
  • After 10 minutes, the infusion is strained
  • Drink the tea 2-3 times a day for four to six weeks

Alternatively, there are in pharmacies, health food shops and health food shops pressed fresh juice, which is taken 2-3 times a day a tablespoon. In spring, the freshly harvested young stems can be chewed daily or prepared as dandelion salad.

Regeneration using the artichoke

The artichoke leaves (Cynarae folium), among other things, a liver detoxifying and -regenerierende effect is attributed, which is attributed to the contained Kaffeoylchinasäurederivate and other bitter substances. Here, the bile-specific effect in the foreground, which leads to a regulation of fat digestion and, consequently, to a reduction in blood lipid and cholesterol levels. The artichokes can be eaten as a vegetable, taken as fresh juice or drunk as a tea.

Danger: Since stimulating gallbladder action in gallbladder and biliary tract obstruction can lead to painful colic or even gallbladder eruption, these conditions are contraindications to the use of artichoke.

Liver detoxification with milk thistle

A direct effect on the liver tissue is achieved by the use of milk thistle fruits (Cardui mariae fructus). The effective silymarin acts as an antagonist of various known liver toxins, for example, the poison of the green tuberous mushroom. By altering the surface structure of liver cells, it protects them from the ingress of toxic substances. It stimulates the formation of new liver cells and thus promotes the regenerative capacity of the organ.

The milk thistle can be used for detoxification by drinking 2 to 3 cups of fresh infusion daily.

For a liver tea with milk thistle you need:

  1. 0.25 l of hot water
  2. 30g milk thistle fruits
  3. 15g dandelion herb with root
  4. 15g peppermint leaves
  5. 15g andorn herb

Bring the water to a boil. Mix the herbs and pour 2 tsp of it with the hot water. After 10 minutes, the infusion is strained. If necessary, the tea can be sweetened with a little honey.

Strengthen the liver with daisies and chicory

The list of liver and bile-producing medicinal plants is long. Suitable are e.g. Liverwort, Celandine, Boldoblätter, Yarrow, Centaury, Odermenning, Angelica root, yellow sorrel and turmeric, which is also referred to in Germany as "Turmeric". An Austrian-American research team led by Michael Trauner from the Medical University of Graz, for example, was able to confirm a few years ago in a study that can be tackled successfully with turmeric for liver disease.

Another proven home remedy from the field of herbal medicine is a tea with daisies. Because the herbaceous plant has always been valued for its protective and invigorating effect on the health of the liver.

For a daisy infusion you need:

  1. A quarter of a liter of water
  2. 20g flowers and leaves of daisy
  3. 20g nettle leaves

Mix the herbs. Bring the water to a boil and scald with 2 tsp of the mixture. After 10 minutes of brewing time, stop the tea and drink a cup of it 2 to 3 times a day.

If the bile flow is disturbed and the liver is to be strengthened overall, the Wegwarte can provide good support. This grows - as the name suggests - preferably on roadsides, but comes, for example. also on Ackerränder and railway embankments before.

Characteristic of the plant species of the daisy family are their sky-blue flowers, the flower heads are usually open only in the morning hours. The chicory has a detoxifying, stimulating and strengthening effect on the liver and bile, but comes, for example. Also used for skin diseases and eczema.

    (dried in the pharmacy available)
  2. Pour the mixture with a quarter of a liter of cold water

Liver friendly diet

Even without the direct supply of toxic substances such as alcohol, drugs or medicines, the massive influence of chemicals and environmental toxins, the liver is fully utilized solely by removing, rebuilding and reconstructing the food and resulting metabolic products. This is all the more the case, the more greasy and greasy the meals are and the more the food has been subjected to preserving procedures.

Accordingly, it is important to strive for a permanent change, towards a varied diet with untreated, wholesome foods. In particular, the diet should include plenty of fresh vegetables, cereals and legumes and, to a lesser extent, dairy products, meat products and fish.

Cleaning by fasting

For targeted cleansing and detoxification of the liver, a fasting cure can do good service. However, this should be done slowly and moderately, otherwise the organism would be overloaded by the excretory toxins. For example, the fasting can be initiated with a three-day apple diet (Einasten) and then transferred to a juice cure.

In addition to carrot juice, beetroot juice, spinach, celery and parsley juice, only water should be consumed. If the detoxification process causes itching on the body, a glass of hot water usually helps in the morning, to which the juice is added to half a lemon.

Arterial and halitosis can be reduced with chlorophyll tablets, which are available in the pharmacy. Of course, alcohol, nicotine and other harmful substances are not used during the whole time. The liver can be supported in its detoxification process with warm coils (or a hot water bottle) or daily packs of castor oil.

Detoxification of the liver with Glauber's salt

The detoxification of the liver can also be done with Glaubersaft. This is sodium sulphate (Natrium sulphuricum), which is used orally as a laxative. After a few days of preparation, during which mainly apple juice is to be drunk, Glauber's salt is taken on two consecutive days in combination with grapefruit juice and olive oil. In the subsequent vigorous bowel movement are now numerous green stones that swim on the surface of the chair and bile as bile, i. as the smallest gallstones, to be interpreted.

The Schüssler salt No. 10 has a stimulating effect on the liver and can therefore support the detoxification well. (Image: PhotoSG / fotolia.com)

The liver cure with Glauber's salt is often referred to as "horse cure" due to some violent vomiting and massive diarrhea. A gentle alternative is the No. 10 from the Schüssler mineral therapy. Natrum sulfuricum D6 stimulates the function of liver and bile and supports the elimination of toxins from the body. The Schüssler salts can be taken over a longer period, even during a fasting cure.

Psychosomatic aspects

In a consistent psychosomatic approach, as is done especially in the classic "disease as a way" by Dethlefsen and Dahlke, stands next to the function of the organ in the material area a correspondence on the emotional level. Thus, a healthy liver function is interpreted as a physical expression for the ability for the "right measure", a good evaluation and evaluation of people and things in their own lives as well as the distinction between what is beneficial or toxic for one.

For a good liver hygiene, one can check for oneself whether in the area of the professional, the interpersonal relationships or beliefs an excessive amount is too much or persons, circumstances and circumstances, which do not do you any good. Subsequent sorting and de-mucking should also lead to relief on a physical level (see, for example, "Shamanic Exercises for the Modern Man"). (jvs, nr, updated on 23.8.2016)
