The neck

The neck forms the connection between the head and the trunk, whereby in this relatively narrow section the trachea, esophagus, larynx, thyroid, cervical spine, various nerve tracts and the blood conduits for the supply of the brain must find place. Numerous muscle groups help to stabilize the neck and allow movement of the head. The anterior cervical region with larynx, air and esophagus is often referred to as the throat, the posterior neck is known as the neck.

Discomfort in the neck area can be of various kinds, with the spectrum ranging from inwardly perceived throat or throat pain, swallowing problems or a lump in the throat to more externally detectable neck tension. The most common cause of sore throat is inflammation of the pharynx due to bacterial (eg streptococcal) and viral (eg flu viruses) infections. The tonsils (tonsils) can also be affected, which may be expressed in a painful tonsillitis. Unpleasant tension of the neck muscles, however, can be observed, for example, as a result of repeated incorrect loading. However, a stiff neck or stiff neck can sometimes be seen in a sunstroke and in life-threatening meningitis. Difficulty in swallowing is a common feature of pharyngeal and tonsillitis, but may also indicate pharyngeal cancer or esophageal cancer.

Finally, there are a variety of possible cervical impairments, each associated with different symptoms. If necessary, external changes of the neck area can be detected, such as in the formation of a so-called goiter (goiter) in the course of thyroid disorders. Occasionally, however, the discomfort in the neck area can not be attributed to a disease lying here, but they are, for example, in connection with an allergy or expression of a neurological disease (swallowing problems as a symptom of Parkinson's disease or dementia). A medical examination of occurring complaints in the neck area is therefore strongly advised. (Fp)
