In nuclear power, the principle of nuclear fission is used on the one hand as a weapon (atomic bomb), on the other hand, for generating energy. Originally, nuclear energy was said to be a particularly clean technology for energy because it does not produce comparable emissions, such as coal-fired power plants. However, the problem of disposal of the resulting radioactive waste was ignored. In addition, the risk of meltdown has long been criminally underestimated. The Chernobyl disaster in 1986 made it alarmingly clear for the first time what far-reaching consequences are likely to be caused by a reactor accident. Even today, the region around the former reactor is not habitable. After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, in 2011, the German government finally decided to phase out nuclear power in light of the risk. The problem of storage of radioactive nuclear waste, however, is still unclear. (Fp)
