Aspirin is a medicine that was launched almost 100 years ago and is based on the active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Initially, it was intended primarily as a remedy for pain and fever, but the anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory effect opened a variety of other applications such as in the prevention of heart attacks and strokes. Aspirin also carries the risk of side effects, with nausea and vomiting especially irritating mucous membranes, bleeding in the stomach and intestines, and possible asthma attacks in asthmatics are worth mentioning. The use in children today is assessed rather critically and in pregnancy, special caution is required.
