asbestos
Because of its special material properties (high strength, heat-resistant), asbestos was widely used as construction or production material until the late 20th century. However, there were already early indications of significant health risks when dealing with asbestos. Asbestosis has been identified as a lung disease caused by inhaled asbestos fibers. The risk of lung cancer among those affected is also massively increased. Despite the prohibition of the production and use of asbestos in Germany for nearly 20 years, the material is still relatively widespread as a "legacy" and many people still face unforeseen health risks, for example by disposing of their old flower tubs or the roof renew their garden house.
